Clare Bottle, Chief Executive of the UK Warehousing Association, has written to Andy Burnham to congratulate him on his appointment as Prime Minister.
The warehousing industry will be vital to the new Prime Minister’s plan to reindustrialise the UK, and spread growth across the country. However, UKWA warns in the letter that the sector’s ability to contribute will be hampered if proposals made in recent weeks to increase business rates on warehouse are pursued.
Clare Bottle highlighted increases to warehouse business rates – including a new charge on properties with a rateable value above £500,000 – that have only just come into effect. As a result, the prospect of further tax increases has caused “understandable consternation” across the sector.
The letter stresses that UKWA is keen to support the Government on efforts to make the planning system work more smoothly, and increase access to training for workers.
