In July, the Prime Minister announced that Business Rates for pubs, clubs and music venues would be cut by 20%. He had previously proposed that this cut would be paid for by increasing rates for warehouses of online retailers.
However, the announcement of the policy suggested instead that the Government was looking to raise revenue from “businesses that do not make a positive contribution to local communities, such as vape shops” and cracking down “on businesses that sell through online marketplaces but do not comply with their tax obligations”.
Many UKWA members have already seen substantial Business Rates rises this year, from a combination of the revaluation, and the new multiplier for premises with a rateable value above £500,000. Our sector needs to keep making the case to politicians that warehouses are a vital part of the supply chain for all businesses, online or high street, big or small. Higher taxes for our members mean higher prices for everyone, including consumers.
We have drafted a template email for members to send to their local MP. You can find the email address of your MP here, including how they should be addressed.
We would urge you to personalise the email as much as possible. MPs receive a large volume of automatically generated emails; you will be much more likely to receive a considered response if you show the contribution your company makes to the constituency.
If you operate sites in more than one constituency, you can either write to all of the relevant MPs, or choose the one that represents the constituency where your head office is located.
If you have any questions, please contact policy@ukwa.org.uk. We would be very grateful if you could also copy us in if you send an email to your MP.
