Government issues official Freeports Consultation Response, Oct 2020

In February this year, the government set out proposals for a new Freeport policy in their Freeports consultation. Subsequently, due to the impact of Covid-19, the consultation process was extended to capture views, particularly from the business sector. Accordingly, UKWA sought views from members by way of a survey and prepared a formal submission in response to the consultation in June.
The government has now produced a response document, which sets out how the UK Freeports vision has been developed in response to the consultation feedback. It reaffirms a commitment to establishing Freeports across the whole of the UK, provides greater detail about how Freeports will work and the benefits they are believed to offer.
The document also outlines government plans for a bidding process to decide Freeport locations, which will be launched shortly.
