The achievements of both companies and individuals across the warehousingand third party logistics (3PL) sectors were recognised at UKWA’s Annual Awards for Warehousing 2010 ceremony, which was held recently at London’s Dorchester Hotel.
This year the Association received a record number of entries in all categories and the winners were chosen by UKWA’s Awards Committee, which comprised Phil Culling, Chairman of storage systems specialist Redirack; Mel Grainger, a past chairman of UKWA and Roger Williams, the association’s Chief Executive Officer.
Roger Williams commented: “UKWA’s Awards are established as symbols of achievement in the 3PL sector and emphasise the importance of logistics within today’s economy. The high number and quality of the entries we received underlines the professionalism that runs through the modern logistics industry.”
A total of ten awards were presented and the winners were:
Best New UKWA Member Award: White Arrow Logistics Ltd
White Arrow Logistics is a new business incorporated during 2009 with the aim of providing swift, flexible, high quality warehousing solutions. White Arrow impressed the judges with its thoroughly professional approach, the quality of its warehouse and the enthusiasm of the workforce.
Environment Award: NYK Logistics UK Ltd
As part of a global business that has green investment principles, NYK Logistics UK Ltd has been at the forefront of environmental initiatives for some time and was an early adopter of teardrop trailers and biodiesel vehicles among other new technologies.
Technology and Innovation: Briggs Equipment UK
Briggs’ Spreadshield system is an intelligent asset management tool which gives customers full control of their fleet with a suite of options that can be individually tailored to provide the exact level of control, efficiency and HSE compliance required.
Training Award: Systems Training
Systems Training’s submission described a training project designed to reduce fuel consumption and accident rates among the fleet of a home delivery and collection specialist. The project has saved System Training’s client £2.2m in fuel costs and accident damage.
Team of the Year: Wincanton Group Ltd
The Wincanton DSE site in Yeovil serves Augusta Westland Helicopters and provides a support service involving the receipt, inspection, storage, issue, design, packaging and export of both Ministry of Defence and Military Export helicopters. The Wincanton team has been named “Support Supplier of the Year” by Augusta Westland Helicopters for two consecutive years.
Customer Service Award: Bibby Distribution Ltd and MDA Ltd – joint winners
Bibby Distribution worked in partnership with Toyota to provide Toyota’s customers with an exceptional offering. The Same Day Service operation that Bibby helped to pioneer allows Toyota and Lexus service centres to order spare parts before noon and have them delivered by 3pm on the very same day.
Meanwhile MDA Ltd has successfully attracted a succession of major clients by demonstrating a strong ‘client centric culture’ which sees MDA’s entire business perform as an extension of its clients’ organisations.
Employee of the Year: Bob Steward, EDF Energy
As a result of performance management processes introduced by Bob Steward across EDF Energy’s warehouse facilities, the company’s logistics operation has become up to 30 per cent more cost efficient.
Warehouse Manager of the Year Award:
Stephen Steenson, The Malcolm Group
Having joined the company as a clerk, Stephen Steenson was appointed manager of Malcolm’s Newhouse operation in 2009. Stephen has overall responsibility for all onsite activities at the Newhouse facility and since his appointment he has proved a strong leader while his hands on approach and first class communication skills have won him the respect of his staff and the senior management at Malcolm Logistics. He is expected to feature strongly in Malcolm’s management team in the years ahead.
Chairman’s Award: David Williams, Great Bear Distribution
Having served TDG in a number of capacities, David Williams established Great Bear Distribution in 1994. Since its launch Great Bear has grown to become a leading third party logistics company. Still independently owned it is respected for its innovative solutions.
“David Williams is a fine example of all that is good about our industry, and it is fitting that we can recognise his successful career and contribution to logistics with this Award,” commented Roger Williams, chief executive officer of UKWA during the presentation ceremony.
Over 450 UKWA members and their guests, together with suppliers to the warehousing industry, attended UKWA’s Awards for Warehousing 2010 ceremony.
