Venture Lighting Europe has supplied its Uni-form® Pulse Start 200W lamps and control gear, as part of an “energy saving conversion kit”, to the Bridgnorth plant of Novelis, leading manufacturer of rolled aluminium. With only Phase I of the project complete, the company is already reporting a reduction of 50% in (kw) running costs and is now looking to relamp the rest of the facility.

From its operations around the world, Novelis produce high quality aluminium sheet and foil for a wide range of “major brand” customers. The company is also the world leader in the recycling of aluminium beverage cans and annually recycle 35 billion worldwide.

In Bridgnorth, Shropshire, Novelis operates from a large manufacturing site where there is a foil rolling division and also a packaging division, manufacturing wrappers for the international confectionary, diary and tobacco markets.

Following a site survey at Bridgnorth with Venture Lighting, Novelis was made aware of the Uni-form® Pulse Start 200W lamps, which operate on a reactor/ignitor ballast system and can be supplied as an “energy saving kit”. The kit is easily retrofitted into existing fittings and could quickly be installed into the company's low bay luminaires.

After an initial trial of 6 Venture conversion kits, lux levels of the 200W lamps were compared with the existing 400W Mercury lamps. The results showed an improvement in colour temperature that provides a much better light level, with reduced colour shift and faster warm up times. Installation in the remaining 2,537m² manufacturing area followed, with Novelis now reporting a reduction of over £6,500 in running costs in this area – amounting to a payback of 6 months.

Commenting on the installation, Daniel Clues, Continuous Improvement Manager said: “We have found the upgrade kits very easy to install using our own in-house electricians, as the unit is supplied as an “all in one” consisting of ballast, ignitor and power factor capacitor. We are delighted with the results in relation to light levels, reduction in maintenance costs and energy savings achieved. We are already in the process of converting another area of the building with the Venture kits.”
