Today Prudhoe Mill produces SCA brands Velvet, Cushelle and Tork. The Prudhoe Mill site in Northumberland was developed as a tissue producing operation over 40 years ago and was subsequently acquired by SCA in 1996. Prudhoe Mill has over 400 employees and contractors on its 56-acre site. The mill itself stands opposite the historic remains of a Norman Castle, built on the 'Proud Hill' from which the town takes its name. Prudhoe Castle, begun in 1161, was regarded as one of the gateways to the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and eventually became part of the estates of the present-day Duke of Northumberland.
